Spring 2017

We're so boring.  There's really not been much to write about for the first half of 2017...apart from my endless unreasonable whining about the weather, the rate of grass growth, horse disasters, dog shenanigans, and our pie in the sky dreams....

We have owned our patch of mud for 3 years now.  We were brutal with it for the first 8 months, the big old oaks on the boundaries were either removed due to safety concerns, pollarded or had a seriously harsh short back and sides, but they have now recovered and look stronger for it.

We've had the "lawnmowers" on the land since March 2015, they've thrown two years of abuse at it eating everything and poaching up what was left.  We've turned around a few horses in that time too and welcomed newbie Dave to the heard at the end of Feb this year.  He's a very chilled out 6 year old ex racehorse who I hope to have some hunting and perhaps eventing adventures in the future.

After we sorted the trees out and replaced much of the fencing we progressed to removing the gorse by crawling under, wrapping a chain round the base and pressing the tractor "go" peddle!  We nearly set the whole place alight when we burned the dead stuff.  The cleared ground has been harrowed, stone-picked, grazed, flooded, rolled, dried out, flailed, scorched, poisoned, poached, pooed on....

But, sitting in the meadow last weekend contemplating our ongoing planning permission for stables and sorting out the rest of the gorse, we realised we were surrounded by the pink haze of meadow grasses and flowers we had seen long ago on our first viewing.  It's a tough old bird, made of sterner stuff than we gave it credit for... the meadow has returned and she's looking better than ever.

Oh and we are more often on instagram these days; lara8littleacres for more regular photo updates.

2017 Planning Ahead

Although not an enormously indulgent Christmas I think the stink from the dogs bums tonight tells a story that we could all do with a more sensible January.  We need to recover from the routine of overeating, film watching and lolling around, interspersed with sudden and intense bouts of physical exercise (hunting, dog walking, log chopping) before slipping back into a mince pie induced coma.

1st Jan 2017 - Kenfig Sands

New diaries purchased, family organiser is on the kitchen wall... we just have the small matter of Woody being sent away with work for a bit.  I plan not to shuffle round in my pj's for too long while he is away, I might allow myself a day or two but there is lots to do.

While I will leave the big hefty jobs until Woody gets back I hope to crack on with turning Tan into a log moving pony ready for clearing the stacks we will need to process for next winter.  We are well on our way and she has proved to be ready and willing to learn.  It made me realise how much I love working with young horses and I started the search for another young horse to join the family for some fun and eventing.

Meanwhile I can get on with the never ending, rock picking, bramble slashing, weeding and I need to oversee the plans for the stables and barn.  The outline approval agreed Woody found a very experienced local architect who is currently drawing up the plans for the final spec approval.

Santa did bring us one very useful pressy for the land this year, a Wolf Magnetic Sweeper (£40-50 from Amazon), this has proved invaluable and the haul of metal detritus is quite terrifying!  We thoroughly recommend getting one of these for your driveway, garage or yard to avoid punctures and injured hooves and paws.

Over Christmas Woody (my hero) put in a couple of days of serious work whacking in a whole line of fence posts by hand, 25 in total, his poor hands and body were wrecked for days.  This has allowed us to catch up with the fencing plan that we drew up over a year ago.  The delay imposed by the poor weather had given us time to evaluate the plan and see if it would work in theory before putting in any fixtures.

The electric tape and insulators have arrived and I will start creating the next paddocks this weekend, ugh my most favorite thing!

Happy New Year!
